158 pages, frontispiece, 22 b/w plates (all present). Old bookplate on front endpaper (partillay removed), wear on corners and spine, some colouring on one plate, otherwise a nice and solid copy. First hand account written by a member of the German Antarctic Expedition 1901-1903 under Erich von Drygalski. After brief stays at the Crozet Islands, Iles Kerguelen and Heard Island the expedition of 32 men in the ship Gauss sailed towards the Antarctic continent and discovered Kaiser Wilhelm II Land. Three inland sledging expeditions were undertaken to the Gaussberg, the only visible landmark on this desolate coast. The expedition stayed for 12 months. This account by Friedrich Bidlingmaier is very rare. There was a second edition in 1916 which appears to be equally rare.
